The emotional power of two words

January 29, 2009

you-happier

Best Buy’s new slogan ‘You, Happier’ could apply to any brand:  a community college, lettuce, wood carving tools.
But they got it first, and it’s awesome.

If awesome isn’t enough of a description for you, this guy gets into it.

I’m a tad bothered, however, that Best Buy’s ads don’t come up in YouTube when I search the name and slogan together.   Come on big companies!   Milk YouTube!!

YOU can decorate the Oval Office (with cheap MDF)

January 28, 2009

IKEA lets people furnish Barack’s new home office with EmbraceChange09.  They also set up an Oval Office at a DC train station so people can live it.

Hey Obama, since you’ll have to assemble it all yourself, that Expedit shelf will contour the curved wall if you get it wet.

Have you all heard the actual statistic that 10% of Europeans were conceived on an IKEA bed?
The other 90% were conceived on the floor cuz their parents couldn’t put the bed together. (credit Jay Leno!)

Candid Reactions in a Future Porsche

January 22, 2009

[YouTube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZFYvU1PtFg]

Porsche’s teaser for its 2010 997 GT3 RS has passengers’ expressions caught on camera as the car is thrown around a track.

The reason this is powerful is that the 2010 version will only look slightly different than the 2009, but the facial reactions obviously hint that Porsche has made bigger changes under the trunk and in the suspension.

While speed and power statistics can impress, most people undoubtedly want the experiences had by these giddy folk riding shotgun.

Yay Porsche!

Lou Lou Luv should be the standard

The displays at Lou Lou Luv on W. Broadway in Kitsilano always stop me in my tracks.   For years the trinket retailer has come up with a nearly breath taking display every few months.    Go check it out – my BlackBerry pic doesn’t do it justice.

Why is it only Lou Lou Luv?  Why don’t more retail outlets venture into heart pounding window displays?

The Whopper Sacrifice was beautiful

January 15, 2009

whopsac

Burger King started a Facebook app:  Whopper Sacrifice – If you delete 10 friends you get a free whopper.
Too bad Facebook shut it down
, citing ‘privacy issues’.    Still, the Whopper Sandwich proved to be stronger than 233,906 friendships.

In three days there have been over 200 stories about this on Google news alone.
In a perfect world, I would be BFFs with Crispin, Porter + Bogusky.

Dine Out Vancouver is 180 restaurants creating a special menu with set prices that are less-than-usual cost.   The much fanfared annual event encourages people to try some of the city’s finest eateries.

The downside, some would say, is that it attracts the thrifty bridges and tunnels crowd who are keen on a ‘funky, urban experience’.  This can change a restaurant’s atmosphere and cause eyes to roll.

Iconic hipster hot spot Chambar has made their intentions clear in a recent Georgia Straight ad, and will no doubt funnel a new brood of loyalists eager to dodge the suburbran hype.

It’sss Saturday night … at the …. drug store!

January 12, 2009

Last night I was at the new London Drugs at Cambie and Broadway.   The store-wide speaker system was cranking out some cheesy 70s/80s music, which was definitely selected by someone with taste.

I was downright digging it.  Then I noticed other people bopping their heads, which started conversations.  The cashier even told me people had complimented on the music.   I didn’t want to leave – I hung out for longer than anticipated, boogieing from aisle to aisle.

Maybe it isn’t cranked when grandmas make up a larger percentage on Wednesday mornings, but for too long we’ve limited having a fun experience to only certain venues/industries.  Oh what a joy to see a staid, typical drug store encourage loiterers and patrons to bust a move.

Sunglass icon Ray-Ban has some of the funniest viral videos.  All they do, which is all they need to do, is get people talking about their brand.
