Resonating Phrase

December 16, 2009

Right after I bought a tasty protein smoothie at Liquid Nutrition on Queen St. in Toronto the cashier said, “Thank you for investing in your health today.” It totally stuck with me.

In a small subliminal way this retail chain of healthy smoothies and weird ‘wellness’ food empowered me with the choice I made.

That one sentence may not transform their revenues, but small, effective moves like this stack up in any company’s favor.

Killer SEO Trick

December 9, 2009

So Kyle and I discovered that my little teeny blog comes up FIRST in Google Images for ‘Scion Logo‘.  Whoah.  There are others too where I’m on the first page of Google Images.

Half of my daily hits are from people landing on my pics when searching for images.  While these visitors may not be my target audience or close friends, they’re still hits man!

Be mindful of EVERY photo name you upload to your blog.  Use simple file names that are searchable.

Public Swedish Watches

December 9, 2009

This is how Triwa makes grumpy Stockholm train commuters smile.
I bet they paid less for this than the typical wall boards.

Don’t be afraid of approaching big huge overwhelming government-regulated entities with offbeat marketing ideas.  You may stick way the heck out in a crowd.

Brainy Biker

December 9, 2009

Today I met Julien Myette riding his bike in a foot of fresh Montréal white stuff.  Julien has a company that helps people move using bikes.  Check him out in the Toronto Star.

Julien is one of the only bike riders in Canada that uses a triangle board on his bike for marketing.  Why don’t more bikers do this?

Beyond What You Sell

December 6, 2009

Gene Wigglesworth in Vancouver, Washington sells this funny shirt to show his city’s constant need to explain where they really are (n’t).

Gene owns a muffler shop.  People come to his muffler shop to buy this shirt.  But you know what??  Some people that buy a shirt end up getting a muffler.

So ya, a funny, sought after shirt that has nothing to do with mufflers sells more mufflers.

Draw more of them in with something else.

A Renewed Focus On Search

December 3, 2009

Have you seen Google’s home page?  The search bar comes up first and the rest of the menu a few seconds later.

They’re pushing just a slight reminder that their core function is basic search.  It may seem subtle, but imagine the millions of people that use this page 100x a day (like me) and the effect it will have.  Back to basics…

Bag Champion

December 3, 2009

Every grocery chain sells cotton bags but the President’s Choice brand is milking being the ‘authority’ of the perma-bag trend.

Their cause is just and their reasons are noble, but they’re not doing anything different than other bag providers – they’re just making a big rig-sized deal about it.  People WILL shop here because of this campaign.

Without being a bandwagon pansy, leverage something that’s trendy as much as possible.

Cherish Email Subject Lines

December 3, 2009

Ever since Gregg at WreckedExotics.com switched from sending out emails with the subject “Wrecked Exotics Crash Update” to something more dramatic and specific, he has seen a massive jump in traffic.

Late last night he sent out an email titled “Huge Truck Rolls Over Police Car Like a 4 Wheeler” and he had 500,000 clicks by 9am.  That’s not a misprint – he has a ridonculously massive following.

No matter how big your email list is, give them a subject line as potent and dramatic as possible, but stay legit.  A great place for headline ideas, even though I loathe this woman’s perspective with every fiber in me is The Huffington Post.  Damn you, Arianna for being so bold.

Making Stolen Songs Legit

December 3, 2009

So if there’s an iTunes link to the song you pirated for your YouTube promo, does that make it alright?  It actually might.

YouTube obviously wants things to go this way.  They’d get a cut of every song sold and wouldn’t have to devote so much time with Lawyers from Universal Music yanking a bajillion videos.

But the iTunes link only works from YouTube, not when you embed the video!

If anyone has insight on this, please comment.

And ya, Dolly is sooo CrossFit.
